Blog: peace LAN Party Nov 30 2003, 19:29 (UTC+0) | peace writes: Yesterday just over half a dozen of my friends and I had a LAN party. We played Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, Natural Selection, and The Wastes. Some of us couldn't get Brood War working, so we just gave up on that until next time. I think sometimes you just have to drink pop, eat pizza, and play video games all day; kind of like a type of therapy

Blackout Aug 15 2003, 22:36 (UTC+0) | peace writes: Well, as many people know, yesterday at 4:12PM, a lot of Southern Canada and Eastern United States lost power completely. I'm not sure how the U.S. has fared, but 5 minutes ago power was restored to my city block. It was over 24 hours without electricity. Most people still do not have it restored.
I thought the neatest thing was how my community has come together, we have had community radio every minute since the blackout (I listened with a portable radio), and many people have been helping out mothers without baby food, etc. Our local government has not yet made any announcment, and with that I am disappointed.
I did not mind the lack of power however. I read a book, and did some other things that generations before did in their free time. But if it went any longer, it would have been worse.
Well, "brownouts" (temperary power-loss) has been occuring all over Ontario (my Canadian province) since we have had power back, so I expect it to go out a few times over the next fews days. But it was an experience, and definately something new to put in my blog!
P.S. I do hope my Canadian brothers and sisters and my dear friends south of the border get power back soon. :)

1 AM Aug 09 2003, 06:58 (UTC+0) | peace writes: *sigh* It is 1 AM, I have been working for 5 hours straight trying to get my WinModem working under Red Hat Linux. I have finally done it, and I am posting this from that OS. I am pretty excited about doing this, I am feeling more confident doing things with computers that "aren't normal" as my parents put it. The emotion I am feeling is a new one to me, and I don't think there is a word for it yet; it is estatic, but mostly exhausted. So, in light of my responsibility to contribute to the development of the English language, I will invent a word for this feeling (that is common to many hackers and programmer, I assume!)... Fuabens (FUlly Exhausted but A Bit Estatic and in Need of Sleep) ... maybe that isn't the greatest contribution, but remember: it's 1 AM and I'm feeling quite faubens, so don't expect me to be an expert of linguistics. Eyes beginning to close... I guess I'll finish my blog entry for now, good night fellow elves!

science and engineering Jul 12 2003, 00:43 (UTC+0) | peace writes: So, this past week I volunteered at a Science and Engineering camp for kids in the grades 4 to 8 at the local university. This was a blast. Here is an overview of some of the projects the kids did:
- made a quiz game (circuit board, buzzers, LEDs etc)
- made toothpaste
- created personal homepages using HTML
- designed and tested toy rockets
- built robots with touch sensors
- made their own techo music on the computer
- learned about bridge design and tried out a design challenge
Well, helping these kids out was lots of fun, and I have to admit I learned a few things myself. Maybe I'll find the time sometime soon to write up specifically about one of those projects and post it under news. That's all for this week, cheers.

freedom Jun 24 2003, 19:26 (UTC+0) | peace writes: Today...
I am officially -- drumroll -- out of school for the summer! My last exam was this morning, and I productively spent the afternoon playing NetHack (nethack.sourceforge.net) and programming Python (www.python.org) scripts. I have some great things lined up for this summer, tonight I am going to meet some fellow volunteers for a local Science and Engineering camp for kids. Also, a LAN party (cs) is in effect for me and my pals sometime soon. Looks like it's all sunny skies, diet coke, engineering, and computers for the next 2 months... it's tough I know ... but someone's gotta do it

success Jun 14 2003, 22:57 (UTC+0) | peace writes: Today...
I just finished working with my notebook. Last night I finished doing a split partition, 60% FAT32 and 40% Linux (and a swap too). On the bigger one I run windows 98, and I tried Debian on the Linux one, but it didn't work, so now I have RedHat 7.3. I also got my school marks back yesterday regarding how well I was doing before writing my exams...they are all better than I expected ! Now I feel very confident for my exams. Well, I'm going to practice some latin-english translating and I am also going to start my new book, Dostoyevsky's The Idiot. I got it from a local used book store, one of my favorite places in town. I like to support the local, homegrown businesses. Well, as Little_Princess says, peace out!
